An increasing problem world wide is the epidemic of obesity, including children. Some of us may already be aware of this but other may not know that obesity is a problem that is very hard to eliminate once it is established in the body. That is the reason which we need to make every effort to take action on the behalf of children everywhere who are developing obesity at the very early stages of life. The parents or guardians of obese children should make every effort to be educated on the knowledge of what is a balanced diet and how is the best way to train their child or children in their care to develop the essential lifestyle habits needed for a healthy and prosperous life.
The focus of this article will be placed on the importance of keeping the levels of fats deposited in a body at a safe and proper range. Medically it is stated that the human body stores fat in the form of independent tissues and these tissues are known as adipose tissues. The adipose tissues contain large numbers of fat cells in them.
Before a child turns one year of age, the number of fat cells have a tendency to increase in number. After the child turns one however there is no real change in the number of fat cells. What may change though is the size of the fat cells in the child’s body. The increase or decrease in fat cell size is relative to what the energy input and output is of the child. The medical field has also pointed out that if a child has an overabundance in fat cells during the first year, the fat cells increase in quantity fast. As a result, the fat will have more places for storage and later on in life fat will take up residency in the cells and then obesity is the result.
A child’s diet must be handled differently from that of an adult’s. So many people may ask, “So how are we to decrease this storage of fats?”. First of all, it is unwise to make large cuts to a child’s diet who is obese as we would for ourselves as adults. It is not the weight itself that must be reduced but rather the storage of fats. We would however, want to make sure we are providing the child with a wholesome and healthy diet that gives the child what he or she requires in the body but at the same time provides a measure to prevent future weight gains. Doing so will allow a child to grow up using the excess stores of fat within, and therefore slowly rise to a more ideal weight. During the time of restricted dietary intake, it is of utmost importance to make sure the child receives a good supply of vitamins and minerals, hopefully through the proper eating habits.
Steps to take for preventing childhood obesity.
There are many things that can be done in regards to preventing obesity in children, but the top two would be –
1.) Provide a proper eating platform for the child which would include low carbohydrates, a medium amount of fat intake and foods high in protein. Avoid high carbohydrate foods such as sweets, sugary foods, jams, chocolates, cakes or ice creams.
2.) Provide sources for physical activities or encourage participation in sports which will keep the child active and using the excess fats as energy for play instead of being stored in the body.
