Childhood Obesity has Serious Concerns

Childhood obesity has become an epidemic and the fact that it is on the increase is a concern to many parents and doctors. There are many factors that can be attributed to the rise in childhood obesity, and the good news is that most of these factors can be changed through behavior, diet and lifestyle changes. Only few factors like genetics cannot be changed. Hence there is an urgent need for parents, schools and health professionals to come together to face this problem affecting our children, to make sure that we protect our next generations.

Reasons for Childhood Obesity

Obesity is caused because of over consumption of calories and not able to burn them. Over consumption is caused by over eating and calories are not burnt because of lack of exercise. Someone who has more that 95 % of the body mass index can be termed as obese. This definition is used for both adults and children, and the percentage of kids who meet these criteria is high as 20 % in recent years. When you consider the health implications of childhood obesity that include diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, it is easy to see why doctors are so worried over the rise in these numbers. Problems caused due to obesity are cardiovascular diseases caused due to accumulation of fat in arteries.  The accumulation of fat proves to be a block for blood circulation and heart has to pump blood with a greater force, which increases the risk of heart attack.

There are many causes that can be attributed to childhood obesity. An important cause of obesity in children often stems from a sedentary lifestyle. Most people gain too much weight because they are taking in many more calories than they are burning. Stress can also be an influencing factor for obesity. Some people tend to overeat because of tension. Stress comes because of family problems, financial problems, medical problems etc.

Measures to control child obesity

We can control child obesity and reverse this increasing trend. First, education is very important to help parents and educators become wise to healthy habits that need to be incorporated in our kids. Reducing the amount of time that is spent in front of the television and computer, and encouraging outdoor play and participation in sports is one method to help kids keep their activity level up and their weight down. It is also vital that parents pay attention to what their kids are eating, and encourage healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Summary: Regular exercise is another important factor in reversing the numbers in the current child obesity graphs. Encourage your kids to play outdoor games like cricket, basketball, football etc. Discourage them from playing computer games, television etc. There should be timetable for children to watch television and computer games. They should be made compulsory to go out and play outdoor games. Also they should do regular exercise and keep themselves active and fit.
