Warning for our future: Children Obesity

Obesity in the children of this country has been increasing in recent years, and the numbers are enough to concern many health care professionals. Today, one in every five kids can be considered obese by the current standards on weight and obesity. This standard is calculated using the body mass index, also known as the BMI. When the BMI reaches the 95th percentile a person is considered obese. This is true for adults, as well as children and teens. While 20% of kids were labeled obese by the health care industry, another significant percentage was considered overweight. Most doctors in the United States will agree that obesity has become a crisis of epidemic proportions among the youth of this country. The national standard can consider twenty percent of children obese standard, and more are categorized as overweight. Obesity is defined as being in the 95th percent in body mass index (BMI), and a child is considered overweight if he is in the 85th percent of BMI. Problems caused due to obesity are cardiovascular diseases caused due to accumulation of fat in arteries.

Main causes of obesity in children

Obesity in children can be hereditary, but there are many other factors that contribute to the weight problem in this country that are much easier to solve. If obesity is caused due to genetics, then it is incurable. But mostly, lack of physical activity can be directly related to the weight problems that are seen in this country. Between the television, computer and video games that attract a child’s attention today, there is much less time or opportunity for outdoor play. . Encourage kids to play outdoor games like cricket, basketball, football etc. Discourage them from playing computer games, television etc. There should be timetable for children to watch television and computer games. They should be made compulsory to go out and play outdoor games. Also they should do regular exercise and keep themselves active and fit.

You should talk to your child about obesity and also try to keep his diet as varied and fun as possible in order for him or her not to feel deprived, but to enjoy and embrace the diet and exercise plan and, thus, achieve the desired results. He should willingly accept the diet plan and also start enjoying exercise. Forcing to do things will never have the desired effects but instead the mental status of your child.

The second factor that contributes greatly to obesity in children is the abundance of junk food. All children enjoy junk food snacks like pizza, popcorn, burgers simply because they are tasty and they should not be deprived from them, however, what parents often don’t realize is that it can easily replace a nutritious meal and that can cause damage to your child’s health in the long run. Hence parents should keep a control on their children and give them junk food only on special occasions. Normally, children should be given home cooked meal, which is high on nutritional value.. We should also monitor the lunch given by school whether it has the necessary nutritional content or is it only junk food.

Summary: Obesity in our children is a problem of epidemic proportions today. The good news is that there are steps that parents and doctors can take to ensure that our kids are as healthy and happy as they can be.
