Diet & Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is very dangerous type of diabetes which is life-long and is due to the presence of high sugar level in blood. This occurs when our body fails to respond efficiently to insulin, a type of hormone secreted by pancreas. This is also the most common type of diabetes. This is caused as insulin is required to move the glucose into the cells for the production of energy and our body fails to respond to them. Since in that case there will be too much sugar in the body so it will cause diabetes.

If a person is suffering from diabetes then that person will develop resistance to insulin produced by pancreas and cannot get inside fats and muscle’s cells for production of energy. After some time abnormally high level of sugar build in the blood. This condition is called hyperglycemia. Many people have hyperglycemia also have high insulin levels in the blood at same time. Overweight people have more chances to suffering from diabetes as the fats in their body interfere with the work of insulin. Type 2 diabetes mostly occurs gradually. Most people are overweight at time of diagnosis of this disease. However, it may occur in thin people and especially in elderly.

Type 2 diabetes has its link with genetics i.e. if a person’s blood relative had this problem then that person has a very high chances of suffering from this problem.

Symptoms of this disease are:-

  • Increased urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Increased appetite
  • Frequent or slow-healing infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Erectile dysfunction

If the above symptoms are there then the first step is to eliminate symptoms and stabilization of the blood glucose level. This is done so to prevent further complication of the matter. The primary treatment is to exercise and diet.

One should regularly self test the blood sugar to learn how well once combination of diet, medication and exercise are working. This test should be done before the meals and at the bedtime. This testing should become more frequent if the person is sick or under lot of stress. One can take an alternative and use a device called glucometer which can provide exact blood sugar reading. You need to prick your finger using a small needle giving a tiny drop of the blood. Now place blood on test strip and then put the strip in the device. Results can be seen within 30 - 45 seconds.

One can go for meal planning which includes choosing healthy food, eating at right time and eating right amount of the food. Managing your weight with eating well balanced diet is very important.

Regular exercise can help diabetes patients control the amount of the glucose in their blood. It also helps in burning the excess calories and even fats which can help them managing their weight. As we say prevention is better than the cure so, try avoiding lot of high sugar food and also oily food to live healthy life.
