Avoid Holiday Binging

It happens to us every holiday season.  Many of us in fact resolve not to do it again the next year.    I am not talking about New Years resolutions, which most of us do not take seriously, no I'm talking about the holiday binging that usually adds inches to our waistline from Thanksgiving Day to New Year's Day.

The reason this happens is simple, many of us binge during the holiday.  This in itself would not be too bad if the binges did not also occur at a time when our physical activity is reduced.  Well, at least this is true for people living in the Northern Hemisphere.   In the southern hemisphere, the weather conditions are the opposite of course.

Avoiding holiday binging is not the easiest thing to do.   Many people including yourself feel like celebrating and of course food is often part of the celebration.   This is not saying that food should be removed from the celebrations as that would be wrong, but rather that you should avoid binging as part of the celebration.

Avoiding binging during the holidays takes a considerable act of will for most people.  In fact, you have probably absentmindedly or even perhaps deliberately overate to join in the festive mood.  It would be antisocial to not eat anything altogether, especially if you are at a family get together where the meal is the whole point of the get together.

The most important thing in avoiding holiday binging is remembering that simply because food is available, it does not mean you have to eat it.   Yes, it may mean disappointing your grandmother or your aunt when she offers you that delicious second helping of pumpkin or apple pie, but instead of giving in to the demands, it might be better to pull to excuse yourself from the table and go watch the football game.   Of course, if you are young enough, some places offer an actual game of football that you can play rather than just watch professionals.  This option is entirely up to you of course, and usually occurs on Thanksgiving.  (It could occur on Christmas or New Years, but neither is common place.)

Avoiding holiday binging is a matter of self-control and in many cases politely turning down that extra food.  We all know  how difficult this can be, especially with offerings like ham, mashed potatoes, and various casseroles on the table, but if weight control is  your goal you will regret not avoiding the holiday binging when  you next step on the scale.    What is more important is that if you do not avoid the trend of holiday binging, you will need to spend weeks trying to lose the weight you gained over the holiday.   So just be sure to avoid holiday binging entirely and you will not be chewing yourself while using the exercise equipment in your gym.   Plus, it may not make extra purchases on new clothes necessary considering that you will still be able to fit into your old ones.
