Calorie IntakeThe question of what your calorie intake should be is not an easy one to answer. There are too many factors that go into determining how many calories a person needs on an average to keep them going and these are age, activity level, and how efficiently their body burns calories to begin with, more commonly known as a person’s metabolism. Guidelines have been set up to help you determine what your calorie intake should be. A teenager needs about 3,000 calories while a full grown adult needs about 2,000 according to the United States Food and Drug Administration. This figure is based on the several assumptions especially that most people in that country do not get enough exercise. So, if you live a sedentary existence, you can probably safely go with these figures and your daily calorie intake would be sufficient to meet your needs. But not everyone has the same level of activity and despite the stereotypes and warnings that abound many people in the United States and other well developed countries are becoming more active. The question then becomes how can we make sure we have a high enough calorie intake to meet our daily needs? Fortunately, some health fitness guru came up to the answer with simply equations that involve something called the basic metabolic rate. Unfortunately, there is not enough room here to describe all the factors that go into determining this number, but a simple Internet search will supply you with all the factors that go into this and how to calculate it for yourself, but the basic metabolic rate alone is not enough to tell you how much your caloric intake should be. Depending on your basic metabolic rate there is another series of calculations that will let you know how many calories you should take in a day. You are probably groaning already if you hate doing math, but it is a simple multiplication problem. A person who is sedentary should multiply the figure they come up with on the basic metabolic rate chart by 1.2 to figure out what their caloric intake should be. Unfortunately, there is not enough room to print the entire table, but because activity levels can vary, you may fall somewhere in between a number on the chart which may require a certain amount of guessing on your part. But keeping track of the amount of calories we eat every day is simple if we just read the packages on our food. Using things like portion and calorie control will help keep us in shape and keep us from gaining too much weight. If our goal is to lose weight, doing the same thing will let you know where to cut back and if you keep gaining weight your calorie intake may still be too high. Just make sure your calorie intake is enough to maintain your energy levels, unless of course you are on a diet, where the body should pull the stored energy out of its fat cells. |
