Lifestyle changesIf you have been to your doctor in recent months, he has probably told you to make some lifestyle changes. This is assuming of course that you are your target weight, do not smoke, chew, or otherwise take too many drugs. For most of us, the doctor is warning us off high fat, high cholesterol foods and telling us that we are eating far more than we should. It is tempting to let this advice go in one ear and out the other as the cliché goes. The first lifestyle change a smoker should make to improve his health is to quit smoking. This may mean that the person that kicks a tobacco habit may gain some weight after he is off of the nicotine. (Nicotine acts as an appetite suppressant), but it should sort itself out after a short while. The same advice goes for other drugs in varying stages of legality. Drinking a glass or two of alcohol a day is not harmful, and can be continued if “social drinking” is all that you engage in. The second and probably the most common lifestyle change that doctors want people to make is to their diet. Related to this is the third lifestyle change which is to get more exercise. Diet and Exercise have so much to do with our health that this will be repeated more (and of course, most of us are carrying extra pounds that we do not really need.) Carrying around extra weight is hard on the organs of the body, especially the heart and the liver. (Not to mention that the diets most of us eat are high in fat and cholesterol.) Making the lifestyle changes to your diet and getting more exercise can help you keep in good health and it can keep you in good health longer if it becomes a habit. It may also mean switching from chugging down sodas as your drink of choice to water, a far healthier and low calorie drink. Now the above are the most common lifestyle changes that a doctor may ask you to make. Other changes such as changes to what your clothing are made out of or style of dress are probably too minor to be considered lifestyle changes at all and with the exception of allergies should not really be the concern of your family doctor. Fortunately, as overwhelming as making lifestyle changes may sound when you first hear the phrase, it does not mean you have to completely overhaul your whole life. It just means that you have to make the changes necessary to ensure your continued good health. So, remember the next time you hear this phrase to not let yourself be intimidated. It really is not all that big a deal. Now, that this has all been sorted out, whose up for a quick run around the block to get all of these small but necessary lifestyle changes started? |
