SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS AND OBESITY

Given below are some typical questions that are generally thought of, or asked. Please note that these do not cover the entire spectrum, but examine some basic questions.

  1. Is there a simple way of calculating or finding out whether I am overweight?

Answer: Yes. If your clothes which you were earlier wearing do not fit now, that is one sign. You can check by taking a measuring tape, and just as the tailor does, check out your waist circumference. If you are a man, it should be around 40 inches, and if you are a woman, it should be around 35. Around can be adjusted only upwards say by one inch. If it more than that it means that you are likely to be overweight.

  1. How do I confirm it, if it is above the limit?

Answer: You have a weighing scale in your bathroom do you? Yes, step on it and find out how much you weight is. Then use the table given below to find out whether you are overweight or not. Your height you would already know. If not, just stand against a wall, erect and the back of your head. Mark the top of your head on the wall with the pencil, and measure it.
Use the table. Even if you make a small mistake, it does not matter. Check whether you are overweight or obese as per the BMI calculator.
Adult BMI Chart
See your height or of interest in the left-most column and read across the row for that height to the weight of interest. Use your finger or pencil to trace the column of the weight up to the top row that lists the BMI. BMI of 18.5-24.9 is the healthy weight range, BMI of 25-29.9 is the overweight range, and BMI of 30 and above is in the obese range.  Figure Two

  1. Does weight matter in children?

Answer: Yes, weight matters in children also. Your dietician or physician can give you the right answers. There is a minor variation for children. See your Physician or child specialist.

  1. After reading the above questions, I find I am having healthy weight. I don’t exercise. What are my chances of becoming overweight.

Answer: That’s good to know. Yet, unless you maintain a weight chart, you do not know whether you are putting it on, and in a sudden burst of activity, you might be burning all your calories. With age you might have the propensity to add weight. Plus what’s the harm in exercising. You feel much healthier, physically and mentally. Remember, exercise helps you in reducing your risks of osteoporosis, etc., because you are using your body to keep up to date, and making all parts of your body to work for some time at least.
