Same weight but fatter

There are many different ways that you can look fatter but still maintain the same weight.  Do not rely only upon the scale to determine the success of your diet.  If you are the same weight but fatter, chances are that you are not getting enough exercise and that your muscle has turned to flab.

Muscle weighs more than fat.  You can be very physically fit and still weight more than someone who is flabby and weighs less.  It all depends on how much body fat you have on your body as well as how much muscle.  While the bathroom scale can tell you how much you weigh, it cannot give you an accurate account of your body fat.

The old “pinch and inch” is a good way to determine body fat percentage.  While there are body fat calculators both online and off, a good rule of thumb is that if you can pinch an inch, you have too much body fat.  Take a look at your stomach.  Can you pinch an inch of flab, or is it rock hard?  Do this standing up as most people can pinch more when seated and the abdomen is compressed.  If you can pinch an inch, you need to turn that flab into muscle.

There are many different ways that muscle turns into fat.  It is usually the result of inactivity or stopping a fitness routine.  We have all seen athletes who have become rather unfit after they stopped playing ball.  This is because they no longer trained their muscles and the tissue turned to flab.  Because the fat weight less than the muscles, they can still be the same weight but fatter.

In order to be in good physical shape, you want to eliminate or at least control your body fat percentage.  This is especially important around the middle and abdominal area as studies indicate that people who carry excess weight around the middle are at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.  If you are carrying a lot of weight around your middle, it is imperative that you lose it to avoid medical complications down the road.

By beginning a solid exercise routine, you can turn the fat back into the muscle and be more physically fit.  Do not become obsessed with weighing yourself on the scale as it does not always represent an accurate description of your body fat.

If you have been dieting without exercising, you are wasting your time.  You may be losing weight, but you are also losing muscle tone.  Muscle tone makes your look more fit and defines your body.  You do not want to look sickly, you want to look healthy.  In order for a diet to work properly, you need to watch your calorie intake as well as continue with a daily exercise routine.

If you exercise daily and eat a healthy diet, you will find your body fat percentage beginning to shrink and muscle building.  Do not worry about the scale.  Take a look in the mirror and see how you like your body with more defined muscles.
