Curb Snack Binging

Snack binging is an eating disorder, where people indulge in unhealthy snacks between meals, or even immediately after a meal. Patients of depression, pregnant women, and children are all prone to this phenomenon.

People who resort to comfort eating tend to be overweight, and their strange eating habits do not help them anyway in increasing their self confidence. They tend to avoid company which results in further loneliness and depression. Snack binges calm you initially, after which comfort gives way to guilt and weight gain, and you are perpetually caught in the vicious cycle of eating to feel good, and then feeling bad due to eating.

Pregnant women crave food on account of the hormonal changes in the body. Women who already have an eating disorder continue to indulge in snack binges during pregnancy. On the other hand, normal woman also tend to develop binge eating when they are pregnant.  More number of women from with low income and less education strata of society are found to binge eat.

Dieting does not help binge eaters because during the process of dieting they excessively crave for the snacks and end up binging on the deprived junk food. The only way out is a positive attitude and strong resolution to break the unhealthy lifestyle you have been following for years, to cure the disorder and have a healthy eating pattern.

Think of the amount of time you have spent mulling over food, trying to keep away from the snacks, and dreading to see your flabby body in the mirror. Every time you crave for a particular snack, if you visualize the amount of unhealthy ingredients that go into it, you can stay away from it. And still if you cannot overcome the desire to indulge, the best solution would be to prepare a healthier version of the snack at home.

Unhealthy snacks can be replaced by healthy ones like vegetables, fruits and nuts. Eat salads to quell hunger before having lunch or dinner, and never skip breakfast. Keeping healthy snacks handy instead of unhealthy ones is yet another way of controlling the effect of snack binges. Also never keep unhealthy snacks at home as you tend to reach out of them if they are readily accessible. One the other hand, having to shop for them would give you time to rethink. Consciously avoid buying such food items as you do grocery shopping, and if you have to buy, do so in very small quantities. The good news is that you find a number of healthy snacks, or healthy substitutes for junk food in the market today. You just have to be careful about what you pick and always check the back of the packs for the ingredients.

People who indulge in snack binges are overweight and they seldom exercise. They can start with mild exercises like walking, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or swimming. Avoid sitting around or watching television when you feel like snacking, as sitting idle only encourage binging.  Exercising, small excursions, volunteering for social work or activities like painting, listening to music or singing, meditation and prayer lift your spirits and curb the desire to eat for solace. Lighting scented candles around you, is yet another way to overcome the desire to snack.

Keep a note on your snack binges. Write down everything you eat everyday, and what made you eat a particular snack and how you felt before and after eating it. It would help you monitor your cravings and to cut down the intake of unhealthy food items.

If you do not skip meals and have at least five helpings of fruits and vegetables, it means you are full and you cannot binge on unhealthy snacks. Those who suffer from eating disorders can seek the help of counselors or close friends, because generally in such cases people tend to be secretive about what they eat and how much they eat. They avoid company most of the time, and eat very less at parties for being full on snacks. Being a part of forums where people share their stories is very motivating. Though there is no particular reason why people, particularly women and children binge on snacks, eating disorders are to be taken seriously as they hinder personality development and is highly detrimental to confidence and poise.
