If you are going on a low carbohydrate diet, however, you may not have to limit your alcohol intake as much as you think. Alcohol lowers your metabolism. It slows you down and does not enable you to lose as much weight as you can when your metabolism is high. If you are strictly counting carbohydrates, however, you can have a limited amount of alcoholic beverages and still manage to lose weight. While wine, particularly red wine, has nutritional value, you are better off to have distilled spirits than wine or beer. Distilled spirits contain no carbohydrates, whereas wine and beer, both fermented drinks, contain carbohydrates. Can I drink beer on a low carbohydrate diet? Yes, if you drink in moderation. While beer does contain carbohydrates, it is lower in carbohydrates than some glasses of sweet wine. Limit yourself to one glass a day and be aware that lighter colored beers have fewer carbohydrates than stout beers. What is the best type of wine to drink when on a low carbohydrate diet? A dry red win is the best wine to drink when on a low carbohydrate diet. A dry red wine has less carbohydrate than beers or white wines. You will not want to drink sweet wines as they tend to be higher in carbohydrates. Is non-alcoholic beer okay to drink? While some websites claim that non-alcoholic beer has no carbohydrates, the opposite is true. Most non-alcoholic beers have nearly twice the amount of carbohydrates than regular beers. Skip the non-alcoholic beer when you are on a low carbohydrate diet. Alcohol in itself, cannot make you fat. Nothing can make you fat but over indulging in unnecessary carbohydrates and calories. If you are trying to lose weight through a low carbohydrate diet, take a look at the carbohydrate content in your favorite wines and beers and make a necessary switch. Choose alcoholic drinks that are low in carbohydrate content and do not over indulge.
