All about Complex Carbohydrates

You may have decided to go on a low carbohydrate diet and think that you have to limit all of your carbohydrates in order to lose weight.  This can be dangerous.  Our bodies need a certain amount of carbohydrates for energy.  Before you embark on your diet, make sure that you understand about the two different types of carbohydrates.

The two different types of carbohydrates include simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.  Simple carbohydrates break down very rapidly in our system, are absorbed rapidly and, as a result, leave us very little nutritional value.  Instead, they turn to fat.  Simple carbohydrates include cakes, candy, soda and other sweets that should be eliminated if you are seriously trying to diet.

Our bodies need a certain amount of carbohydrates for energy.  It is better to get this energy from complex carbohydrates.  While a candy bar may give you an instant boost, it offers very little nutritional value, if any, and is quickly absorbed into the system where it turns to fat.  After eating a candy bar, you may feel a temporary boost, but you will soon “crash” after the effects wear off.

For energy and to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you are best to eat complex carbohydrates.  While you will still want to limit the amount of complex carbohydrates that you take during your low carbohydrate diet, these foods will add nutritional value to your diet that you need to get through the day.

Complex carbohydrates include breads, fiber cereals, pasta, vegetables and fruits.  The medical community has long told us that we need a certain amount of fiber, grains, fruits and vegetables in our daily diet.  Most of us do not get enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.  It would be unwise to eliminate all carbohydrates from our diet.

What you can do, however, is be aware of how many grams of carbohydrates are contained in each of the foods that you eat.  You may, for example, switch from white bread to wheat bread to save on carbohydrate content.  You can also switch to wheat pasta instead of regular pasta.

Some of the best complex carbohydrates that you can take include the following:

  1. Bran
  2. Wheat germ
  3. Barley
  4. Maize
  5. Buckwheat
  6. Cornmeal
  7. Oatmeal

Some of these complex carbohydrates have been proven to reduce cholesterol and stave off some illnesses.  In addition, these foods give our bodies energy that is needed throughout the day.

Going on a low carbohydrate diet can truly help you lose weight.  You must, however, be aware of the things that you can do to make your diet easier on yourself.  By simply switching different products, white bread for wheat, for example, and eliminating simple carbohydrates from your diet, you can start to shed pounds.

Complex carbohydrates are a necessary part of our diets.  We can, however, reduce the grams of carbohydrates we consume by learning the grams of carbs contained in all our complex carbohydrate products.  By this education, we can learn what types of foods we can replace with other foods that may have a higher amount of complex carbohydrates.
