High fiber dietScarcely a day goes by where the average television viewer will not find a commercial for some product that adds fiber to their diet. Fiber is good for keeping the bowels and intestinal tracts clean and has been shown to help prevent certain forms of cancer. Unfortunately, the high fat, high protein diet favored by most of us does not provide us with enough fiber which puts even more at risk for developing colon cancer. People who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome can also benefit from eating a high fiber diet. Eating a high fiber diet also keeps the solid wastes that you pass (known as stools), soft and consistent. Getting enough fiber will avoid conditions like constipation and diarrhea. Diarrhea occurs when too much excess water passes through the colon, and constipation is the exact opposite. Every one of us has probably experienced one or the other from time to time and many of us have done both. So we now that we need to add more fiber to our daily diet, the question is how. Supplements such as Metamucil may be all natural but for many people they do not taste very good. The company that makes Metamucil has tried to correct this by offering different flavors for their product, but it still does not beat a natural food in taste – even a normally unattractive natural food like oatmeal. It is not hard to incorporate extra fiber in your diet and rather worry about which foods are the highest in fiber, we merely need to shift the focus of our diets from being primarily meats and starches to being more composed of fruits, vegetables and starches. People unwilling to make any small changes may find the process difficult, but it should not set one to panic. Simply adding fruits and vegetables to what you're already eating can increase the fiber in your diet. Adding bran muffins may be one way to vary the routine a little bit, or you can have a salad instead of that extra value meal to help you start a high fiber diet on your ow. Of course, fiber will keep you regular so it may not be a good idea to consume too much in one sitting, because it may lead to frequent trips to the bathroom. Fortunately, for many people starting to eat a high-fiber diet does not consist of overindulging many of their favorite foods and small portions of many vegetables and certain grains will not make too many trips to the bathroom necessary. For those who do not want to change their diet but still eat bread, many bread manufacturers know offer high-fiber loafs that you can use to make sure you're eating a high-fiber diet. Strangely though, this addition does not affect the taste of the product, but it does increase the price. But starting to eat a high fiber diet can improve the health of your colon and prevent common conditions like constipation and diarrhea.
