Potassium rich foods
Potassium is one of the few minerals that we need increased amounts of as we age. Not getting enough potassium in our diets can lead to serious conditions like irregular heart rhythms, slow healing, and can lower our resistances to many diseases. Because many of us are not getting enough potassium, we should try to get more of this necessary mineral into our diets.
Vitamin pills and supplements may contain the amount required, but most pills are digested and processed without the body getting much benefit from them. (Of course, you will get some benefit from them, but it is a lesser benefit than eating it from natural sources.) Natural sources are a better source, but many people are confused about what are good potassium rich foods that they can easily take into their diets.
Bananas are the first potassium rich food that comes to the forefront of the mind for many people, but they are by no means the only such food. The average banana contains slightly less than 500 milligrams of potassium per fruit. For the average adult under fifty to get the dose he requires, 3 bananas a day are necessary.
Eating a lot of bananas can become tiresome, and while bananas are the most popular fruit in the world, humans do not have the same love of the fruit as do their simian cousins. To stop the tiresome routine of eating a lot of bananas, we must find other potassium rich foods that we can use to supply this necessary nutrient to the body.
Fortunately, bananas are not the only potassium rich food out there. Baked potatoes with the skin on are an excellent source of potassium, in addition to the skin being a great source of vitamin C and other nutrients. The potato itself is a good way to supply energy to the body because of its high starch content.
Good, potatoes and bananas are good source, but what if we do not like those and want to try other potassium rich foods? Dried mix fruits in nuts are excellent sources of potassium. Even the common junk food the potato chip is a potassium rich food. (Just remember not to eat too many of these though as they are high in fat and calories.)
Now that you have at least an idea of what a few potassium rich foods are and that you are probably not taking in enough potassium for your daily diet, you can plan on eating more potassium rich foods right away. Of course, if you really wanted to you could start taking vitamins and supplements to get enough potassium, but taking a pill is not nearly as much fun as eating actual potassium rich foods that are full of flavor. So go ahead and don't feel guilty about eating another banana, it's good for you, and if that fails, well, there are other options that are just as healthy and a few that are not that will keep you in a steady supply of this essential mineral.
