The Secret of Protein in Meals

If you are trying to lose weight, you may want to make sure that you add a bit of protein to your meals.  Most diets fail because people lack the energy to continue exercising and dieting.  A lack of protein in your meals may make you weak to the point of feeling hypoglycemic.

Without a bit of protein in our meals, we become lethargic and unable to exercise.  When you are trying to lose weight, you need to be able to raise your metabolism so that you can easily burn off calories.  You cannot do this with a lowered metabolism.

A lowered metabolism can also lead to you getting sick.  Have you ever gone on a diet and caught a cold?  This could be due to the fact that you are not getting enough protein and have a lowered metabolism.  You lack energy and so does your body.  Energy allows us to not only burn off calories, but also keeps our immune system in good working order.  A lower metabolism can make us more susceptible to catching colds and other viruses.

When you are on your diet, make sure that you incorporate protein into your meals.  Protein will give you energy and allow you to burn off excess calories.  Many foods that are very high in protein are low in carbohydrates.  This is a win-win situation for those on a low carbohydrate diet.  By incorporating a diet rich in protein and low in carbohydrates, you can have the energy to burn off excess fat, without absorbing additional fat into your diet.

Foods that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates include the following:

  1. Roast Beef - 28 grams of protein per serving and 0 grams of carbohydrates;
  2. Roast Chicken - 25 grams of protein per serving and 0 grams of carbohydrates
  3. Fish - 21 grams of protein per serving and 0 grams of carbohydrates.

Fish should be steamed or broiled in order to make sure that you do not add carbohydrates.  Dipping fish in batter and frying in in oil is not beneficial when on a diet.

In addition to meats, dairy products are also high in protein, but tend to have a bit more carbohydrates.  Some of the best dairy products include:

  1. Cheddar Cheese - 25 grams of protein and 0.1 grams of carbohydrates per 3.5 ounces;
  2. Eggs - 6 grams of protein and 0 grams of carbohydrates per one egg;
  3. Low Fat Plain Yogurt - 8 grams of fat and 10 grams of carbohydrates per serving.

Proteins can give you a better boost than a candy bar, particularly when you are dieting.  If you are on a low carb diet, take along some hard boiled eggs with you  to work and eat one of them instead of a candy bar during your low point of the day.  You will get a lasting burst of energy without any carbohydrates.  If you do not like eggs, try some cheese or even a low fat yogurt.  Be sure to remember, when it comes to yogurt, that yogurt with fruit has a significant amount of carbohydrates.
