Protein in meatMeat is probably a bigger part of the diets of many people than it should be. This is not necessarily a bad thing unless people are really overdoing it. Most meats are high in fats, especially unhealthy saturated fats. If you watch the news or at least have a passing interest in maintaining good health you know why these are bad for you, although the news reports have concentrated on trans fatty acids more than saturated fats. However, meats are still the best sources of protein in your diet. Bodybuilders especially should eat more meat than most people, but a certain amount of protein is necessary in the diet for proper function. That, and people on high protein diets often prefer meat over other non-vegetable sources. The question before is not which meats are the best protein sources, although the best source of protein is considered to be chicken eggs, but why meats offer the best source is simple, they have most of the amino acids needed to make the necessary proteins in the body. If you forgo the protein in meat it is possible to get it from other sources, for most people it is easer just to make sure you eat in large enough amounts. Read meats such as pork, venison, veal, and beef tend to be the best sources of protein apart from eggs, but they also tend to be the highest sources of fat and cholesterol. (Eggs themselves are also high in cholesterol, the intake of which most of us need to cut back on.) The next best sources are poultry and fish. Replacing poultry with fish as our sources of meat protein can have other benefits, especially if we eat replace one or two meals a week with a red meat or poultry with fish. Fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are good to health and help you lose weight. (So are flaxseed oils and some nuts.) There is no need to feel guilty about indulging in the occasional hamburger as the body does need a certain amount of protein. Meats and eggs are still the best source for this essential nutrient and do not need to be processed with extra foods in the body to give you all the required amino acids to build muscles, or at least the is the current thinking that can be culled from vegetarian websites dedicated how to live without meat. More recent research (and even then it's not all that new) suggest that this line of thinking is wrong. Perhaps the easiest thing to remember is to eat a well balanced diet and take the advice of eats drink and be merry. Just forget about the next part if you remember the full quote, because for most of us, the case will not be that will die the next day. (At least I hope this is the case for everyone who may be reading this article.)
