Protein in tuna

Tuna is known as a good source of protein, and of course, I would know less about this if I had not just spent the better part of a day reading up on various sources of protein, but let us not worry about. The immediate concern here knows how to maximize the sources of your food effectively. What many people do not realize is exactly how much protein is in tuna. Depending on how it is packed, it is one of the best protein sources to come out of the sea.

This is not to say you should limit yourself to sea foods or any other sources of protein. The human body is designed to take in a wide variety of foods and eating a well balanced diet ensures that you are taking in not only a wide array of nutrients, but also making sure that you are getting a wide variety of proteins as well.

Because some twenty amino acids are used in making the proteins the body needs to build muscle and perform its other tasks, it is difficult to get all the proteins from one source alone, although meats and fish make it less likely that you will need to eat extra food or different combinations of food to meet the daily requirements of protein intake. Tuna, as a fish, also has other health benefits aside from being high in protein, it is low in fat and the fats tuna does have are healthy for you – mostly the Omega-3 fatty acids found in most types of fish.

Protein may be healthy for you and tuna is a good source, but it is best to remember not to take in your protein all at once unless you are doing something like the Atkins diet where the whole point is to give up carbohydrates for a time. Vary the intake of your food throughout the day.

Another thing that has nothing to do with tuna as a protein source and more to do with how its fished is to be careful to which tuna you buy. Dolphins often get stuck in commercial fishing nets and drown because they are unable to come up for air. Most tuna fishing companies now hire people to patrol their neats and free stuck dolphins, but the only way to know for sure they are doing this is to buy dolphin safe tuna. The tuna companies have made this easy for you, if the product is dolphin safe the label will do so.

If you need extra protein from a variety of sources, tuna is one thing you should consider, because it is one of the highest fish sources for protein. Because it is also a favored meal of dolphins, probably for many of the same reasons, make sure to buy your tuna from a responsible company that patrols its nets to keep the animals safe and help get certain species of ocean going dolphins off of the endangered species lists for good.
