Protein in vegetables
Meats may be the best source of protein in our diets, but they are not the only means by which our bodies can get the protein that they need. Some people manage to get by without meat entirely, although such a diet seems to be rather drab to most of us. Still, it is important to know about those kinds of proteins in vegetables whether or not we plan on getting most of our protein from vegetable sources or not.
To understand this, we must first understand how proteins work. Proteins are comprised of about twenty amino acids that the body then breaks down and builds back up. Proteins in meats are considered to be high quality because they contain most of amino acids if not all of them. Egg yolks are the best source of protein in a meat product and this is requirement against which other sources of protein are used.
Now, proteins in vegetables are often considered to be low quality. This is not always true, but the proteins which are commonly found in vegetables do not contain as many of the amino acids that can be found in meats.
Does this mean that you have to eat meat to get good quality proteins? Well, no, not exactly. True, people who include meat in their diets will generally get more and better quality protein, but if you want to try to get more protein from non-animal sources, it is not that difficult. Of course nuts, soy beans and brown beans will always be known as good sources of vegetable proteins.
Certain combinations of food will give you all the amino acids you need to make sure you are getting all the proteins you need, or at least this is the common way of thinking. The truth is that in most cases the combinations required were a food where one group was high in starch and low in protein while the other was high in protein and low in starch. Because the human body needs both starch and proteins to survive, whether they come from vegetables or otherwise, eating one of the other as a staple of the diet, as is the case with beans and rice was not enough to keeps the average person going for the work he needed to do throughout the day.
So, the proteins in vegetables may not be as of high in quality as those you'd get from meats, and most meats will not be as high quality as those you get from egg yolks, but rather than worry about the quality of proteins you are getting, it is far more important to make sure that you are getting enough protein in your diet for the essential amino acids. You can get this from the proteins in vegetables or you can get them from meat. If you plan on getting your protein many from vegetable sources be sure to read the food labels and do some research before trying to cut meat entirely from your diet.
