Sodium intake on weight

Majority of people think that obesity or weight gain is due to fats, triglycerides or other fatty stuffs. But there are three components that are responsible for weight gain and these are fat, lean weight and water. All these three components alter during weight gain due to several reasons such as activity level, diet, heredity and numerous other factors. Sodium is a vital mineral that assists in maintaining normal cell functioning and electrolyte balance. Commonly table salt is the main source of sodium that is used as a flavour enhancer. Proper quantity of sodium is beneficial for keeping body into good health.

Effect of sodium intake on weight varies from each person and also with the quantity he intakes in diet. Intake of large amount of sodium leads to various health imbalance states and a person with high level of sodium is prone to cardiovascular disorders as well as high blood pressure. Further, high sodium concentration can have its impact on kidneys as well as heart. But sodium is found in almost everywhere in body and majorly in fluids such as blood and lymph.

Sodium intake also varies the weight we lost and is known to cause impact on the weight loss. Sodium leads to retention in water and thus the reading can show less number of pounds than you have lost more in reality but you can still notice change of your body compensation. When sodium concentration increases, body has to work hard to maintain the equilibrium in the body. Increased concentration may lead to hold of extra body fluids in blood and around the cellular region which in return lead to weight gain due to water.

Sodium is mainly responsible for effects of dieting. When a person is on dieting, his intake of sodium decreases which in return leads to loss of water as body has to maintain equilibrium and as a result of extra loss of water from the body a person notice changes in his outer body structure. As it is evident, sodium plays an important role in weight loss but it is also known to show equal effects for weight gain. Those people who have high sodium concentration or start increasing food which is rich in sodium they are destined to gain weight as due to increased blood pressure water is retained in the blood vessels. This state is known as sodium retention. For such people, other techniques of weight loss may not show same results and if they are keenly interested in weight loss, then should decrease the intake of sodium in their diet. Another method to counter the effect of high concentration of sodium is to eat a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain potassium and potassium is capable of displacing sodium and hence can lead to decease in sodium concentration in body and in return it can result in weight loss.

Thus effect sodium intake on weight varies and one should keep optimum levels of sodium to stay in shape.
