Does Caveman Diet Really Work?

The idea behind the Caveman Diet is that if the cavemen didn’t eat it, neither should you. Prepackaged food is out of the question, which is what most would consider a good thing. And supposedly, by doing all of this (no, you will not turn into a caveman), you will be able to achieve the powerful strength and brain power that the Cavemen enjoyed. You don’t have to hunt like the Cavemen did. But the diet is supposedly similar. What’s behind the Caveman Diet?
No More Prepackaged Foods
Multiple studies have shown that prepackaged foods and the chemicals in them can be harmful to the body, even contributing to obesity and other common health problems. Caveman Diet cuts out prepackaged foods, because obviously the Cavemen did not have the benefit, or maybe the detriment, of that in their lives.
No Carbs or Sugars
This is one of the more extreme approaches to this kind of diet. But Caveman did not cultivate crops, they did not actually cultivate chickens or other farm animals. Most were entirely reliant on hunting and gathering. So no grains, beans, potatoes, dairy products, sugars, etc.
Tons of Protein
The Caveman Diet encourages you to eat plenty of meat, chicken, and fish, no soy. After all, the Caveman survived hunting food, not soy. And many extremists eat nothing but meat, even buying an entire meat fridge and not eating anything else for the most part. This is not necessarily healthy. In fact, in the extreme cases, you will miss out on many essential nutrients, whole wheats, etc. You might be surprised as the negative impact this has on your life.
Vegetables, Nuts, & Berries
The makers of the Caveman Diet do actually encourage users to eat plenty of berries & vegetables and mostly root based foods, again to mimic the Caveman Diet. But you are not allowed to eat peanuts, and most are more prone to forget about this aspect creating the problems associated with an extreme no carb diet.
The Workout
This is one of the biggest issues for me. The Caveman Diet is found mostly in bigger cities. But serious practitioners don’t hit the gym, go running, etc. Instead, followers of the Caveman Diet have been known to drag SUV’s around their own parking lots and to practice other extreme exercises like that.
Conclusion
If you incorporate fruits and vegetables into your diet, I can’t see a reason why this would be particularly harmful. I would actually stick to more conventional exercise habits. But overall, it seems that it’s just up to you to decide how far you actually want to go.
