Does Zumba Really Work?

Offered in gyms all across America and in your living room, Zumba is a Latin based dance workout first marketed through infomercials. There are some who say that “Latin music makes you feel happy and good”, and it is commonly called a “party born by accident” by Columbian Alberto “Beto” Perez.
Since its introduction, it has steadily grown, and Zumba may even be more popular than P90X. It’s simple, fun, and everybody can do it with no complex choreography and each individual move explained in simple detail, even creating a video meant to appeal to kids who want to get in better shape.
Benefits of Zumba
A lot of people who hate exercise classes do like Zumba, at the very least finding it more tolerable, which is a big move in the right direction. People who use Zumba seem to actually enjoy dancing while also burning more calories. And obviously, people who like their workouts are more likely to do it again.
Zumba gets your heart rate up, and it can burn as many calories as about an hour of running. In other words, if you don’t like spending your hours running on a treadmill, Zumba is just as good, and there’s no reason to feel guilty about having fun while you exercise.
As with any cardio workout, it can obviously burn fat. But what some don’t know about cardio workouts is that it can also increase the aerobic threshold, give you more stamina, increase bone density, improved balance and muscle tone, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol at the same time.
Are the Videos or Classes Better?
The videos and classes are about the same. It mostly depends on your comfort level. The most important thing is to be uninhibited, at least when it comes to the workout. If you are too inhibited, you will not do the moves, and Zumba does require sometimes large and extremely noticeable moves. If you feel that you need more instruction and you don’t feel awkward in front of other people, a class might be the right choice. But if you feel uncomfortable exercising in front of other people, then you might want to try the videos.
