Out of the many weight loss pills available in the market, many are laxative and others are addictive. These pills should never be taken without the prescription of a doctor because of the health risks involved. The benefits should outweigh the risks only in case of extreme obesity. Why Laxatives are dangerous?Use of laxatives either as pills or liquid, or herbal is dangerous and irrational because these cause the body to lose fluid, which causes water retention and bloating can happen where in the patient would like to lose more weight by injecting more laxatives. People appear to be losing weight with laxatives because of the close watch on calorie intake and restriction on food consumption by inducing sensation like vomiting. Note: A laxative stimulates the large bowel to empty, when the food is totally assimilated through the small intestines. Phenolphthalein is a constituent in many laxatives which has been withdrawn because it got linked to cancer. Diuretics lessen water retention Use of diuretics decreases the amount of water in the body causing dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and potassium deficiencies while giving a false sense of weight loss. The Weight loss pill IndustryThe drugs companies are trying to invent solutions to tackle overweight and obesity. The market is rife with solutions which suppress the waves of appetite in the brain, or else restrict the gut capacity in digesting food. The side effects of drugs that interfere the activity of the brain may result in raised blood pressure, chest pain, fever, hair loss, depression, impotence, heart damage and many more. Likewise, the side effect concerning a gut related drug like Xenical is licensed for long-term use, with recorded side effects like diarrhea, unexpected fecal discharge and oily stools if not followed up with a low-fat diet plan. The pills can only be effective with proper medical supervision, a proper diet and exercise regimen. But this may be for a short period. In the long run the benefits of having the pill may reverse. The thought pattern regarding weight loss: No quick solution Even if a weight loss pill claims to be super effective, nothing will be effective if not used with a proper diet and exercise regimen, because otherwise these seem to interrupt the metabolism. |
