Surgery for Morbid Obesity

Obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Obesity is diagnosed when the weight gain of an individual is 20% greater than the ideal weight or as a BMI (body mass index) of 27 or greater. Additionally, obesity can be diagnosed when a triceps’ skin fold measurement
exceeds 15 mm (3/4 inch) in a man and 25mm (1 inch) in a woman.

Morbid obesity is a termed medically provided to a patient who has excessively high amount of fat deposited under the skin. It is the condition when severe obesity threatens one's health and the lifespan of the individual.

HEALTH THREATS

* If a person’s weight is twice that of what it should actually be, then there are more chances of dying early.
* 4-8 times greater risk of death from diabetes or heart attack.
* High risk of "end-stage" (untreatable) obesity.
* Numerous negative social, psychological and economic effects.

First treatment that should be done is to change the lifestyle and the diet of the patient. But if the traditional method of medication of getting this problem cured is inoperative then the following procedures may be implemented:

* person having a B.M.I greater than forty kg/m² or more than thirty kg/m² along with the problems of diabetes falls under this category
* Failure of sustained weight loss with supervised dietary and conservative treatment over the years.
* Motivated individual with acceptable operative risk.
* Super obesity described as BMI >50kg/m².
* If a person is obese for at least 5 years.
* No previous history of alcohol abuse.
* No history of depression or another major psychiatric disorder.
* Only on persons between 18 and 65 years of age.

If he/she meets all the criteria mentioned above then only he or she will be considered as a BARIATRIC SURGERY PATIENT.

PROCEDURES

This Bariatric Surgery can be done in several ways. These procedures are grouped into some main categories.

1. Intestinal Malabsorptive Procedure: which deals with reducing the stomach size with the help of major absorption?
2. Biliopancreatic Diversion
3. V B G, which is better called by the name Stomach stapling. It is the worst operation that a person could have to undergo as it uses staples and more things to undergo the operation and a pouch is also created that is used to contain the fat at the lower end of the body. This is quite difficult to carry.
4. Adjustable gastric banding: The banding technique employs a silicon device that is placed on the stomach and using the naval the banding is done.
5. Sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight loss procedure where the size of stomach is reduced to about 35% of the original size by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach, following the major curve.
6. Gastric Bypass: In this technique it makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine.
