Teenage ObesityTeenage obesity is a terrible thing. Watching teenagers wobble around all day out of breath and struggling to manage the stairs at school is something no one should ever witness but we do witness it and all too frequently. Obesity is a growing problem in teenagers mainly due to their inactivity and diet. When children are born they imitate their parents life, they eat what they eat and do what they do, so if a parent is sitting in the house al day eating all the wrong foods and gaining weight what is the child most likely to do? Exactly the same! Parents need to set an appropriate example in front of their children to save them from suffering from teenage obesity. Teenage obesity can pose many problems and not just medical ones. When teenagers get together they have their own code, their own standards and if any other teenager doesn’t meet those standards they are then the target for bullying which can be a terrible, terrible experience for anyone and more so for teenagers. The teenage years are a crucial part of anyone’s life as these are they ears where you are moulded into the person you are going to be when you grow up, you develop into men and women and if you develop into people with severe insecurities that bullying will cause then it will hinder you for the rest of your life. Medical problems of course are the main factor considered when it comes to obesity; conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are all serious problems and are not to be ignored. The can all lead to more serious problems which in the end can be fatal. So obesity is therefore something that should not be ignored especially in teenagers. Teenage obesity needs to be addressed quickly and safely and no fad diets should be attempted even under adult supervision as these will only cause problems with your digestive system and the weight that has been taken off with these diets are mainly water and lean muscle not fat and is therefore very easy and probably going to come back to haunt you! When talking to teenagers about obesity they need to be encouraged not scolded about their weight and they need to be assured that loosing weight is a positive thing. Teenagers will need all the support that they can get and hopefully in time they can battle the bulge and live happy normal teenage lives! |
