Benefits of Walking

The benefits of aerobic exercise on the cardiovascular system are well known.  The word aerobics itself conjures up images of exercise videos with people in leotards moving around and dancing to the music.      Cynics may suggest that these videos are marketed in such a way to make people think that if they do enough exercise they can look like the models presented.  Well, the videos and the dancing are not necessary to get a good aerboic exercise.  One of the best exercises that can be done throughout a good portion of a person's life is walking.

What are the benefits of walking?   The first and most important is that it is a low-impact exercise that does not require the person to be in pique physical condition.   Running or jogging may be slightly more effective, but it frequently jars the knees and requires special breathing techniques.  Walking does not put too much physical stress on our bodies.

The second benefit of walking is that it increases the metabolism of the body.  An improved metabolism causes us to process the food we eat more efficiently and helps us reduce fat.  Improving our metabolism needs to the next benefit of walking, weight loss and weight control.

Weight loss and weight control lead to the next benefit of walking, improved health.   Walking a half-an-hour two or three times a week lowers blood pressure and reduces cholesterol, not to mention keeping your weight down cuts down on your risk factor for diseases related to being overweight, like type two diabetes.

Perhaps the least tangible benefit of walking, but nonetheless one of its most important, is its role in reducing stress.  Getting out and moving when angry or frustrated helps people to cope better and getting exercise is a better way of working out your frustrations than screaming at the top of your lungs, provided you remember to go out and walk first.

For the final benefit of walking, we return to its physical effects.  Walking is not and itself an exercise that will help you build muscles, the way that weight lifting will, but walking regularly helps keeps the muscles in the legs and feet’s in shape.    Strangely, though it may seem otherwise walking regularly also reduces pain in the muscles and joints.

So walking may not get the attention of many other types of aerobic exercises, but the fact that anyone can do it should make you consider taking it up and reaping many of the other benefits of walking.   Of course, if you really would rather do those aerobic exercise videos, I'm not stopping, but chances are you already incur the expenses need to take up a walking routine on a regular basis.   You pay for the equipment required for this routine every time you buy a good pair of walking shoes.
