Set Fitness Goal

Businesses set goals for their employees all the time.  Many individuals set goals for themselves also.  I am not talking about New Years Resolutions which are promises to ourselves that get made and quickly forgotten.    By now New Year's resolutions should be a meaningless tradition, instead my focus is how to set and keep fitness goals for yourself.

If you do not understand why fitness goals are important, it is not for the reasons many people think they are.  Many people get discouraged if they do not make some fitness goal like “lose 10 pounds” or make my waist three inches smaller.  Instead, the importance of setting fitness goals is purely a psychological one.

When we set goals, we often enter into a competition with ourselves and will continue to check the stats that are important if we set fitness goals.  Instead of dreading the first time we step onto the scale in the morning or take that tape measure to our waists after the first couple days of the exercise program we look forward to it.  Setting fitness goals helps keeps us interested in a fitness program, but if the results are not what we expect them to be we can just as easily get discouraged.

When you set down to figure out what your fitness goals should be, discussing your plans and your situation with your doctor will help you know what to expect and what the best ways to achieve your desired goal might be.   But, the doctor can only help up to a point, eventually you must go outside and plan exactly what your goals are – to be able to life a certain amount, to run a mile within a certain amount of time, or to just have more energy in general can all be achieved, but will take different strategies.

Now the next psychological part of an exercise program is keeping the goals as much as possible.  If the goals are realistic like loose ten pounds in two months, we are less likely to get disgusted and give up as long as it is close, but we do not always make the goals that we intend.  Do not worry either some factor prevented you from keeping your set fitness goal, just remember to set a new one that is within your reach.   Setting unrealistic fitness goals will cause you to lose interest and eventually you will give up as you never meet your intended goal at the end of the period you set aside.

But before you can keep working to achieve your desired level of fitness, it is essential that you set the goals first and plan on how to achieve them.  Once the fitness goals have been set, be sure to measure your progress every once in a while to see how close you have come to being able to achieve your desire.  Of course, if you never actually do the required work, you'll never be able to meat a goal, fitness related or not.
